Horse bit reference - curb bits

Post number two from my collection of bits! This time, a spotlight on the different types of curb. The very first bit in my collection! And co-incidentally, the design I draw most in my 1890s-1920's horsey art. This is a true Weymouth curb, from before people rather got the wrong end of the stick on the word Weymouth and started calling all curb bits by that name, even the fixed cheek ones. What the 'Weymouth' actually describes is this cheek, the ends of the mouthpiece set onto a narrow section and able to slide up or down. In principle, the mouth slides up when the rein is used, giving more leverage, when the rein is slackened and the chee

After Many Failed Attempts,Sucess Finally Achieved

Before we proceed further with future work on Two White Crows, it behooves one to cleave away past embarrassments of creative faux pas- in other words, failed previous versions of currently revamped projects and characters. Granted, my artwork and literature has declined over the recent year; or rather, I've neglected posting anything noteworthy or showing improvement. Extreme stress, overload of mentally-taxing work, and a doggedly irritating paucity of time and inspiration can hound a writer from tending to both his/her characters and their respective audience. My greatest fear is that either I've lost the creative rapport we formerly sh

Katya's Polemic Serenade

A new language often rolls on one’s tongue like the taste of a new tea or water from a different well.  And so had Uzbek sounded for Ekaterina Gregorievna Izotova during her 5 years in the Osh oblast in Turkestan. When the Bolshevik Revolution dismantled the government, Ekaterina Gregorievna found herself, with her two children, leaving their home near Elista. Like the wolf gathering his mate and cubs to a new territory for their safety, so had her husband decided that she and their children accompany him on his transfer to the Osh Oblast. And Ekaterina Gregorievna, like the wolf’s mate, proved her formidable resilience as she

Re-inventing Andrei

Andrei (formerly Dyusha) has been a character with me for ages. In fact, he's been the first actual full character I had envisioned, or rather he came to me. It began in 2006 when his initial concept began forming in my then-teen mind. The concept, summarized succinctly, was as follows: A young serf boy, the product of a rape crime committed by an aristocrat against a serf woman, is denied his birthright. Later, when older, the boy is falsely accused of two murders when his natural father pins the crimes on the boy. The boy is condemned to Siberia, but escapes by way of a river. He is later taken in by a Don Cossack widower who then adopts
